Is Christianity a Religion?

By Arlon Staywell
RICHMOND    May 2025 — There are people who consider themselves Christians who will tell you plainly that Christianity is not a religion.  Your first impression of them might be that they are merely babbling idiots, but that is not necessarily so.  You might have to listen for a long time before they start to make any sense.

Rather than a "religion" they often describe what they have as a "relationship" with some god.  Unfortuitously in many cases that means they can do whatever they want and if people who are not members do the very same things it is wrong and punishable, often harshly punishable.  Where then is the "god" who gives them permission, but no one else?  Communications with the spiritual world being problematic and rather variously interpreted, they have turned to a human leader that they can follow more blindly than any spirit.  God isn't telling them exactly what to think, but Donald Trump will.

They will believe anything Donald Trump says.  They will do whatever he says.  Meanwhile people whose lives are essentially the same are considered the problem.  The Trump people do that because they are too plain stupid to understand any rules no matter who makes them up.  Blind obedience is much easier.  An example concerns education.  Some people in the Trump base will complain vociferously about the inclusion in public school libraries or curricula of pornography or transgender books.  Yet almost every day on "Christian" television is a person who abused alcohol, drugs, and sex for 10, or 15, or in some cases 20 years, sometimes in devil worship.  An assumption often is that merely putting the label of Christian on that person makes it all okay.  But the label is not always meaningful, like putting the label "green beans" on a can of corn.  It is still a can of corn, the reality hasn't changed, only the label.  There is the expression "backsliders" for people whose label proves to be meaningless.

The escapades of Donald Trump with Stormy Daniels would probably make Democrats blush, but his base blames Democrats, not Trump.

There was a time not so long ago when it was reported that "religious" people had less education, earned less money, and had less stable marriages than atheists.  But that was only true while "Christians" were lumped together with all the other religions.  When considered separately, each religion except Christianity had more education, earned more money, and had more stable marriages than atheists.  Maybe then Christianity is not a religion in that sense.  There are a few numbers that do not fit the general patterns.  The very most stable (according to reports) marriages are Catholic (Christian).  Recent wars in the Arab world have brought down Muslim numbers a bit, probably because of the peculiarities of military service.  Still, generally speaking, the problems in the world come mostly from "Christians" and atheists.  Before Trump, Muslims in America fared better than in some other places.

Is Donald Trump really an idiot or does he just play one on TV?  A man in his position in life ought to know better, ought to be able to lead better, ought to have a better understanding of the way things actually work.  Yet he seems to prefer saying the most idiotic things and devising the most idiotic policies.  It is like he is really a life long Democrat who wants his "Republican" followers to appear stupid.  If that is his true intention, it is working quite well.  When he says he could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and not lose any votes, he is probably not celebrating the fact, he probably finds it disturbing that his followers are that stupid.  Yet it can be important to identify them for what they are.

J.D. Vance likely understands that.  Marco Rubio likely understands that.  Lindsey Graham might understand it.  All his true "friends" in politics likely understand that or they would not be his friend.  So who hasn't caught on yet?  Who remains fooled that Trump is a Republican for real?  Why did Trump bomb Iran?  Nuclear weapons in the Middle East could be more a problem of nuclear fallout for the Arab neighbors of Israel than for Israel.  Israel is a tiny country,  I actually heard an argument made that although Iran has no good use for nuclear weapons themselves, Iran could boost Russia's supplies.  That is like saying, "Sure Trump killed some people, but he won't lose my vote!"  Russia has nuclear weapons production already and doesn't have any need for help from Iran.

If Christianity is not a religion, then what is it?  Jesus was one of the world's first great defense "attorneys" (Christians speak of "grace" instead of "law.")  Before Jesus if a person was sick it was widely assumed that person had committed some sin that had to be forgiven and that could only happen with a sacrifice or payment of some kind, usually involving blood.  If that didn't work then it was assumed the sin was worse than first thought.  By the time of Jesus people had begun to suspect that there were other causes of disease than sin.  They still had quite a long way to go before it could be called modern medicine, but Jesus did crack open the field.

One "success" of Donald Trump might prove to be reducing illegal immigration.  Trump has an attitude that probably does scare away illegal immigrants, but at what cost?  One drawback of being wildly prosecutorial is that it scares away legal immigrants as well.  Another drawback is that the people who live here are also scared.  It is not likely a source of pride for them that their country is so wildly prosecutorial.  On top of that there is the cost of putting so many troops on active duty.  As I already noted, nothing Trump has ever said or done appears to make a lot of sense.  Of course some people get away with cavorting with porn stars and violent "protests," but that is only for members of the Trump base, not for Democrats.

It should be obvious by now that the "Christianity" of the Trump base has nothing to do with religion.  It has nothing to do with any discipline, scientific or religious.  They even have songs about not having any discipline.  The people who think Trump is a great leader are idiots who cannot understand right or wrong and must blindly obey some person. They are blind nationalists.

Most people are not good at science and at one time did not like it much.  The space program and subsequent 3 decades of prime time science fiction marked a changing of attitudes.  Now, although they are no better at science than they were before, they "like" science and they think they are scientists.  The reality is that they are stupid, godless pig, "perverts" (I had a more colorful expression but I decided against using it.), which is about as far as one can get from being a scientist.  That goes for both political parties, especially the Trump base.

Sometimes the stupidity of "Christians" is nothing but a lie told by atheists, by posers.  Sometimes the stupidity of atheists is a lie told by "Christians," by other posers.  Much of the problem is stupid people telling filthy lies on each other.  If you believe religion is just a bunch of pig feces, you have been listening to the wrong people.
